In the third year of Jehoiakim's reign, Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon besieged and conquered Jerusalem, taking King Jehoiakim captive and carrying off sacred vessels from the Temple to Babylon.
Selection and Naming of Daniel and His Friends
King Nebuchadnezzar ordered Ashpenaz to select young Israelite nobles, including Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, for a three-year training program in Chaldean language and wisdom. These four were subsequently given new Babylonian names: Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego.
Daniel's Refusal of King's Food and the 10-Day Test
Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the king's rich food and wine, requesting an alternative diet from the prince of the eunuchs. He proposed a ten-day test of eating only pulse and drinking water, which proved successful, making him and his friends appear healthier than those on the king's provisions.
God Grants Wisdom and Royal Appointment
God granted Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah exceptional knowledge, skill, and wisdom, with Daniel also receiving understanding in visions and dreams. After three years, they were presented to King Nebuchadnezzar, who found them ten times superior to all his magicians and astrologers, leading to their appointment to stand in the king's service.
